When I was in Michigan visiting my family at the beginning of September, I learned that the all-girls Catholic high school I attended was making local headlines for firing pregnant lesbian teacher Barb Webb. After 9 years of teaching science and coaching volleyball, it is reported that Barb Webb’s employment was terminated due to her violation of a ‘morality clause’ with her ‘nontraditional’ pregnancy. In the weeks that followed, a social media campaign was launched, peaceful protests were staged, letters were written, the story made national headlines, and an online petition garnered over 60,000 signatures (and counting!).
THEY joined the movement and created a video for the Stand with Barb Webb crowdfunding campaign. Money raised will go toward professional development in diversity and inclusivity for all staff and faculty as well as a student-focused diversity club that provides a safe space, a welcoming community, and a forum for dialogue.
Marian High School is a place that helped me become a confident, proud, independent individual, and it is unfortunate that current and future students are being taught shame and rejection. I hope that this campaign, the headlines, and the thousands of signatures will show all Marian girls that an entire network of support exists out here.
